Can You Make Money Using Damsel In Defense
What Is Damsel In Defense?
So for those of you who do not yet know, Damsel In Defense is a multilevel marketing (MLM) company that specializes in self-defense products for women. However, more than just a company they describe themselves as a global movement to empower women to protect themselves as well as their loved ones.
Their founder and CEO, Mindy Lin, strongly emphasizes the fact that God is the reason for her creating the business as well as their current vision. Damsel in Defense was started in September 2011 and they are based in Boise, Idaho they currently have over 10000 salespeople and have sold over $21 million of products. Not bad!
Their mission is a really strong one. To enable women to protect themselves by providing them with self-defense tools. It’s a huge market with massive growth potential and Damsel in Defense has placed themselves as the market leader in this niche. In researching this article we uncovered a statistic that stated 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted. That’s 20%!
The co-founders, Mindy Lin and Bethany Hughes, had a vision and their entrepreneurship has led to several awards:
- National Assoc. Women Business Owners (NAWBO) 2013 Business Women of the Year
- Rising Star award 2016
- Vision for Tomorrow award 2017
- 2018 Excellence in Salesforce Development
Because of their success, they have also been able to set up the Damsel House Project which aims to help sex-trafficked girls in Cambodia and India.
What Products Does Damsel in Defense Offer?
Damsel in Defense has a variety of different products that they offer to their customers. Their range is compiled of stylish and concealable items that can be used to fend off a would-be attacker and include things such as stun-devices, pepper spray, and electronic alarms. All of their products are branded and tailored for personal use. However, Damsel In Defense is not solely in the personal protection business.
They have branched out and now offer products that specialize in family education, such as board games and books, as well as different types of clothing apparel. One aspect we noticed about their branding is the catchy names for their products, such as Little Ringer Stun Device, Gotcha Stun Device, and Bling It Up – Disable Pin. There’s a product line called Hermergency!
How to make money from Damsel in Defense
- Sell at hosted parties
The company uses branded parties as a networking and marketing gateway. This technique is well known among multilevel marketing businesses and works well to spread their message. As this company has a specific emphasis on the values of empowerment and education, the party set up is ideal to maximize sales as well as share those ideals. One of the coolest things about how the company structures their parties is the name which they have given them: “Power Hours”.
The way it works specifically is that you, who are interested in selling for Damsel In Defense, will contact a Damsel Pro (that is the name they provide for the members who decide to sell products) and they will help you get signed up through their special referral link.
Then you can buy products in bulk at a discount as well as receive your personalized starter kit. In it, you will find some of their current products as well as a guide on how to go about running your own business through Damsel In Defense.
The Damsel Pro through which you sign up, will help guide you through the process of setting up your first-party as well as give you any necessary guidance you may require. You can invite as many or as little people to your ‘Power Hour’ as you would like, however you are encouraged to find a good balance between the number of attendees and keeping the setting personal.
The key is to provide a fun and friendly atmosphere in which you can pitch the benefits of the different products that are offered and then to make sales. You also do not usually host the parties at your own house, but rather at the home of someone who is known as the ‘hostess’.
The primary point behind this is to reach a broader audience and the hostess is compensated with bonuses from sales. The pricing of the products is reasonable and so you are not limiting your customer base to a select few who can afford the luxury purchase.
Selling items in this fashion can work quite well as a party setting often induces the compulsion to do things the group is doing: i.e if one person buys a product then others may do the same, leading to greater profits.
An easy sell?
One of the issues is the products are most likely a one time purchase and so repeat business is going to be tough to get. This means you will need a lot of women locally to you to attend your parties for you to make a consistent income. You are also playing on women’s fears about becoming a victim of a serious crime and you are going to have to sell them the products. What does that mean? From research, there’s not a lot of women buying this type of product online, not even on Amazon.
This means you are going to have to sell the product for them to buy it, and that will no doubt mean instilling some fear about what crime could happen to them and the benefits of carrying one of their devices.
The second big issue is the law. You will have to check whether State will allow personal protection equipment, such as Stun Guns and Pepper Spray, to be carried by a non-law enforcement person.
Damsel in Defense does have a really good training package for new team members and this was recognized with an award in 2018. That’s a positive as so many MLM companies just give you the starter pack and expect you to get on with it. Not so this company, it seems.
Building a Team
As with all multi-level-marketing companies, the emphasis to create income does not only stem from product sales, but more so through the ability to build a network of people who want to do the same. As a Damsel Pro, others will be able to sign up to the company through your referral link, and, as a result, you earn 5% on every product that they sell.
The earning potential increases with the number of people in your network and also how much they make in sales monthly. This is known as a tier system and this business operates using 6 different tiers:
Tier 1 – Recruit
This is the first tier and does not offer anything in terms of compensation apart from 25% commission rates on all products sold.
Tier 2 – Protegee
To qualify for the second tier you need to be making $1000/month in total sales volume, people in this tier receive 30% commission rates.
Tier 3 – Junior Mentor
To achieve this level you need to have at least one active recruit in your down-line and make $150 in sales yourself.
Tier 4 – Mentor
This is reached when you have one qualifying person down-line and have a total group sales volume of $2000, $500 of which comes from you.
Tier 5 – Senior Mentor
Which is the same as the previous but you need to have two people in your group and have a total sales volume of $4000 each month?
Tier 6 – Director
The highest tier is achieved when you have 4 people in your team and have a monthly sales volume of $7500. If any of your team also reach this level then they’ll go alone and you won’t earn anything from their sales. Online sales can’t make up more than 50% of your total.
With each tier you increase your bonuses on sales, meaning your earning potential increases exponentially the further you move up the ranks.
For Damsel in Defense to think you are active, you must sell at least $150 of products, every 3 months. They have a really strict policy if you breach it. They remove your entire downline! This means you have to start building your team from scratch.
How much is it to join?
A Damsel Starter Kit is $99 and this includes marketing and sales items plus some of their products. The Booser Kit is $159 and includes a Stun Gun and Pepper Spray.
How much can you earn?
This is the question on everyone’s mind. As it is a commission-based business model you earn as much as you can make in sales. This is great if you have a large social circle and a knack for sales. If you have the right skills you can make a very large amount of money with this company, many reports earning thousands of dollars each month.
However, this requires discipline and serious sales/networking skills. The majority of people can make a nice side income of a few hundred dollars if they are willing to stick with organizing parties and selling the products each month. One thing to keep in mind though is that commission doesn’t increase beyond 30% on each sale you make yourself, but the bonuses you get from other sales do increase.
Damsel in Defense reviews
Unlike many MLM companies, the majority of online reviews for this earning opportunity are positive. Some quote the company to “be a great place to work” or the freedom that “making your hours” provides. Damsel In Defense may be a very legitimate side business opportunity for those with a willingness to learn, sales skills, and a desire for social interactions.
The Better Business Bureau has given Damsel in Distress an A+ rating.
Damsel in Defense is not a scam and it is a legit business that pays well, so long as you can make sales. Our view is you are most likely not going to be able to earn a consistent amount of money from this side hustle, for the reasons above. This is not the easiest way to earn money online and it will take a lot of drive, energy, and commitment to be successful.
It really depends on you and how you feel about the products, the company’s values and ethos, and whether that resonates with you enough to get out there and begin selling their stuff. Only you know the answer to that. If you do want to start we wish you the very best of luck.
